Sadly, yesterday morning I received some awful news.
Jack’s World is permanently closed.
That’s right. No more twats every day. You can rest easily. It’s done.
There was some amazing footage that I managed to capture.
I can’t believe those people were just walking along as if there’s no towering inferno all around them.
And there was much rejoicing as the world cried merrily “Yay!”
If you’re new to my blog, welcome. You may be wondering…what the hell IS Jack’s World? Well, if you’re one of those people that simply MUST know all the inside jokes, then you can find out about it in one of my BrittCon recap posts…or you can watch the epic video post here. But truthfully, it’s really much ado about nothing. Suffice it to say that there has NEVER been a more annoying string of 29 characters of text in the history of mankind. ‘Nuff said.
So I got a new iPhone. And there was much rejoicing as the world cried merrily “Yay!” OK, maybe *I* just cried merrily “Yay!”
Had to wait in line for 45 minutes at the Apple Store, but I got my 8GB iPhone in black. Would have loved a 16GB, but just couldn’t make that happen. You know, without kidnapping some young waif off the street, taking them to an abandoned hotel, surgically removing their kidney, and selling it on eBay. And you know *that’s* a pain in the ass. Fucking transaction fees.
I have heard from many people how excellent the Apple customer service is, and I have to say that, yeah, it’s true. While I was waiting in line, some Apple “concierge” dude came down the line with a handheld computer jobbie and asked if I was already an AT&T customer. I am. Then he asked for the last 4 numbers of my SSN and my phone number. I typically don’t give out that information until the third date, after we’ve already experimented with flavored lubes and diesel-powered vibrators, but for an iPhone? You better believe I gave up my digits. He looked up my account information right there, and said I was all set to go.
Then it was just wait. Wait. Wait.
Wait.
I found myself sixth in line. For 25 minutes. Then I was fifth. Then thank God…I was suddenly third because two guys were together! From there I was wishing that the two people ahead of me would spontaneously combust.
*coughing from all the smoke*
Concierge: “Oh my! What happened here?”
Me: “Well, apparently these people were here for an iPhone but their body temparatures simultaneously escalated to a ridiculously high level. I saw them start to smolder, and I was considerate enough to hock a loogey on them, hoping it would stop any conflagration, but no.”
Concierge: “That’s terrible!”
Me: (nodding) “It really is. Nothing we can really do now. But I’m next, right?”
Then I snapped back from my little fantasy and a blue-shirt Apple dude came up and said, “Are you ready, sir?” It was all smooth sailing from there. He was attentive, helpful, and efficient in every way. We went over to an Apple laptop and he quickly pulled an iPhone from the back room and got me set up in no time.
“You know that once we do this, your other phone will be shut off automatically, right?”
“Yeah.”
And sure enough, before I left the store my iPhone was my new phone and the old phone? Well, it’s a glorified paperweight.
“You’ll want to calibrate your battery,” said the dude.
“Calibrate it?” What the fuck? “What do you mean?” I’m picturing opening my iPhone and hooking it up to a voltage meter with black and red leads, maybe an oscilloscope to check the frequency and make sure I’ve got a nice wave pattern on it or something.
“You use the phone until it’s completely dead,” says the dude, “then charge it up fully, use it AGAIN till it’s dead, charge it up fully, and you’re good to go.”
Oh. That. I thought that was called training your battery’s memory. Because, you know, rechargeable batteries DO have memories. If you’re one of those people that routinely slaps your phone on the charger when it’s down to a half-charge then you’re going to seriously shorten your battery’s lifespan. Seriously.
I spent the next three hours going back and forth from the old phone to the iPhone, entering phone numbers and names…unaware that I could have imported my contacts from Google. But really? I don’t keep the Google contacts all that updated, except for email addresses.
So yes, I love my iPhone. Tell me, iPhone lovers, what are your favorite apps? Especially if they’re free. And how can I get my iPhone to sync up with the Google calendar?
Anecdotes and photos from my short trip to L.A. yesterday will come tomorrow. And the Summer of Love continues on Tuesday with more guest bloggers every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday this month. Sorry that one person backed out recently, but I’ve already filled Tuesday’s slot with a new friend of mine that I met at BlogHer, so it’s all good.

Burn in hell, Jack’s World… you will not be missed!

There are so many cool free apps that I only paid for one, and it was $1.99.

Jack’s World is probably just moving to e-commerce. Who needs a storefront anyway?

Jack’s World is dead? Wow. May those daily 29 characters be replaced by…. nothing. Just friendly twats from Karl.
Congrats on the iPhone. My wife has the iPod touch (the 16gb model). We’ve not updated it to the new 2.0 firmware yet, but will by the end of the month.
Free apps? I think most people responded already to all of the cool apps, including Twitterlator.

Jack’s world may be dead but at least you got a new iphone out of it right?

I haven’t figured out how to get my phone to sync up with Google Calendar yet – that would be awesome if it did, though.

Suck it, Jack’s World! Suck it long and suck it hard!
And hey, your iPhone experience allowed me exercise time in a mall and as we all know…it’s always about me.

Dave2 – I know you will miss it greatly. Y’know, deep down in your subconscious.
Whit – Yeah, there are a lot of great free apps.
Kevin – That’s true…
Marty – Jack’s World is no more. Twitterlator is pretty cool.
Sarah – Yes indeedy.
Avitable – That would be cool. I’m looking into it. Hell, I don’t know about all this iCal shit. Seems the options are kind of limited for us Windows hanger onners.
Hilly – Rumor has it that you’ll soon be joining the iPhone crowd.

Oh great. Now I want an iPhone. Where am I supposed to get that money from. If I could win Avitables contest I could get one for free, but I have no idea what the hell the answers are….

If Hilly gets an iPhone that leaves Motley and I as the Bohemian Rebels. I’m seriously liking my Dash though. There’s a lot of stuff out there for Windows Mobile. I’m just not sure what I want or need yet in terms of apps. There are some Twitter Windows Mobile clients. I just haven’t gotten that far yet in my smartphone learning curve.

Freelance Guru – Actually, Avitable is offering an iPod touch, which pretty much has everything an iPhone has, except the phone, I think.
Winter – I think any new phone is fun. You can probably do lots of things with your phone that I can’t do.

There’s a line from a BNL song that I always think about if I have to wait in line very long:
“I can’t stand to wait in line long
So I built a new machine
It just measures up the distance
and then eliminates the folks between.”
So if I’m standing in a long line with a big smile on my face, that’s what I’m thinking.

rest in peace, jack’s world.
(yay for you being happy!! if it takes an iphone, then cool.)

Learned something from this post (read mine from today)
Now I’ll go back and read about this Jack dude.
Congrats on the iPhone … I’m afraid I’d need iPhone 101 to handle one of those.

Jack’s World gone? I bet Hilly is gutted…
You should get the free lightsaber app! It’s totally useless but all the more fun… and free…
Reply
Penny – How much do I love you for quoting BNL? Lots.
Hello – Ah, Jack’s World. Goodbye, my friend.
Nancy – It’s incredibly easy to use. Very intuitive.
DutchBitch – Hilly is very upset, yes.

You’re new power to “spontaneously combust” people is very enviable. Definitely gives new meaning to “You’re fired!” Imagine Trump’s hair ablaze.

The free apps that my husband is most likely to demo to anyone willing to listen are shizam and urban spoon. Let me know what you think!

Did Shiny kill Jack’s World?
DAMMIT, SHINY!
Hey, look at my IP address. WHEE!!!!
Reply
Papa – It’s amazing that Trump’s hair hasn’t *already* caught ablaze, really.
Sportfan’s – I’m getting the Shazam, but don’t think I need Urban Spoon. I seriously doubt that my little town is in their database.
Poppy – Ooh, are you in the new location?
Reply
I am!!! And I’m using Dawg’s computer so I just signed out of his MyBlogLog and signed in as me instead… in Opera. We’re reduced to having me use Opera while he uses Firefox. Good times, good times.
Reply
Poppy – You could always use Safari, too.
Reply
I’m not a big fan of Safari, regardless of OS. I’m really enjoying Opera! It has some severely cool features.

Welcome to the club.
I only use free apps because I AM A CHEAP ASS HO.
Ahem.
Wordpress app – have actually written an entire post in it. Love it.
Twittelator. Showtimes.
QUITTER. You have to get quitter for when we quit.
The Roman Catholic Calendar. (Yes, I’m serious.)
Google reader – iReader? whatever. Something like that.
I also have the entire works of Shakespeare. In an app.
yeah, I’m a tool.
(And I used outlook for my contacts and calendar because it was easier to type and sync.)

Playing a somber melody for the departed Jack’s World.

That’s some scary looking fire, dude.

Oy vey with the iPhone. Congrats on the new phone. I’m very happy for you and pleased you didn’t have to hijack a kidney to get it.
Even though I’m a blackberry girl, can we still blogdate? Or will you be forced to break up with me? Spill.
PS: Hilarious post.

Karl, you’re cracking my ass up.
It was so great to see you at the BlogHerCon again this year! Can’t wait for next year!
Reply
Poppy – Well, I’ve only used Safari on my phone, but hey, if you like Opera then cool.
Britt – Thanks for all the app suggestions. (Already had the Roman Catholic calendar.)
Pixie – The world is somber now.
Dragon – That’s kind of how fire is, really. One minute you’re lighting a cigarette, the next – BOOM! – Jack’s World is in flames.
Katie – Oh, we can still date. We’re both addicted to our phones and that’s what matters. Oh, and that we like each other, I guess. That might mean something.
Dana – great to see you again, too. Wish we’d had more time to hang.

Did Jack’s World close for real or are you putting it to rest?
Congratulations on getting an iPhone finally. I received mine as a graduation gift last year, well kinda, my parents gave me money and told me I HAD to buy myself something. It hasn’t left my hands since.
I have the WP app, the Facebook app, Twitterfic, Weatherbug, and YMobile. I did not know there was a Roman Catholic Calendar…I’m going to check that out.
Reply
Lisa – Just putting it to rest. It’s still there, no worries. LOVE the iPhone. I’ll have to check out the YMobile. What is that, Yahoo?
