The One Where I Might Not Need Surgery, After All

So I went to go meet with the new surgeon on Wednesday. I was supposed to meet with him and get a new surgery date. What I got was something altogether different.

This new surgeon says that there’s a 75% chance I won’t need surgery, after all. That I could be healed through physical therapy. I said that the last surgeon said physical therapy would be counterproductive.

“Who told you that?” he said.

I gave him the doctor’s name, and he nodded with a smile. As if to say, yeah, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He told me that he recommended 6 weeks of physical therapy. “I’ll be happy to cut,” he said, “if the therapy doesn’t work and it’ll just be a tiny cut, arhtroscopic.” Another thing the other surgeon said was that it would be totally open shoulder surgery.

This explained why I’d received a huge packet of physical therapy paperwork in the mail, as well as two orders of painkillers and anti-inflamatory meds.

So was it Kismet that my doctor called in sick just before my surgery? Would it have been unnecessary surgery? I don’t know.

I have an appointment on Thursday to meet with a physical therapist. There are very specific orders the surgeon has given for physical therapy. We’ll see how it goes.

In the meantime, I know that these painkillers are really helping me sleep, and that’s a good thing. Soon enough, I fear my shoulder will be given such a severe workout that I’ll need those painkillers big time.

AFTER ALL OF THAT BULLSHIT?!? On the one hand, woo that there’s a good chance you won’t need surgery. On the other hand, REPORT the other doctor for incompetence! It drives me nuts that most specialists go straight to the most invasive solution, rather than trying everything else first. Good luck!

@Tiffany, I’m not going to bother with the other doctor. I’m just glad he called in sick when he did, or I might have wound up with surgery I didn’t need. Then again, I still might need surgery after the physical therapy. Either way, I’m sticking with the new surgeon.

See? Everything happens for a reason. Hope the therapy helps and surgery is completely uneccesary.

    Enjoy the pain meds!

Kismet… completely. Any time you can avoid surgery, that’s a good thing IMO. Hoping the PT works for your injury.

Yeah, the fact that your surgeon called in sick may turn out to be a blessing in disguise mate.

Well, glad you don’t need surgery possibly. On the other hand, I’m sorry you seem to be going through a roller coaster trying to get healthy after us roller girls threw you for a loop! Good luck!

I have gone through many rounds of physical therapy (I’m into years, here, not weeks and months) over my life, and I have universally had great results. It’s often hard work, but my experience is that it is always always worth it.

I hope your experience is the same. Best of luck to you!

They say that second opinions are a good thing, but when they are both sooooo completely different than each other, it really makes me worry.

I hope it all works out, whichever way you have to go.

Glad you don’t have to deal with surgery. But, did you ever find out what happened to the Doctor? did he die?

@Missy, Thanks. Never found out about the surgeon.
