Fuck 2008. Might As Well, It’s Gone, Anyway.
I suppose I should write something one last time before the year is officially out in less than four hours. I know I’ve been very absent in the blogiverse these last months and I plan on changing that. I’m not going to say it’s a resolution because nobody ever keeps those fucking things, but you can mark it down for 2009. Less absence, more – presence.
The older I get the faster time seems to zoom by. Albert Einstein only had it partially right. Time can speed up under a number of cosmic conditions, but the quickest most assured way to quicken the passage of time is to grow older. 2008 came and went in the blink of an eye.
I’m thankful for a number of things this year, mostly the great many friends and acquaintances I met through the Intertubes. I wish I had more local friends. Mark that as another non-resolution for the new year. Don’t get me wrong, I love my friends, whether they’re local or global, but there’s nothing quite like sitting down with a friend in person, sharing great wine and conversation. Or Guinness. And if there’s nudity involved somewhere in there, then so be it, particularly if it involves sex.
Oh, and more sex. Another non-resolution. I’d like to say I’ll have 3 times as much sex in 2009 as I did in 2008 but my elementary math skills tell me that 3 times 0 is still, sadly, 0. So I want FOUR times as much sex next year. That oughtta do it.
In a year that brought me from Typepad to Wordpress, took me to California and Dallas and New York City and Philadelphia, and took me back to employment, I raise my glass.
There will likely be more than one glass tonight. I have a huge honkin’ bottle of Baileys and a 6-pack of Guinness in the fridge.
I wish I was with you. Really, I do. I wish we were together, laughing and drinking and celebrating. Instead, I’ll have to settle for text messages, email, chat, and Twitter.
I do hope the very best for you in 2009. May you find joy and love in abundance, may your glass never empty, may the laughter far outweigh the tears, and may I find myself in your presence at least once.
And may I get a girlfriend.
What? As long as I’m putting it out there to the Universe.
Happy New Year.

Just a short post to say Merry Christmas to all my friends out there. Or Happy Hanukkah. Or Kwanzaa. Or Festivus. Or whatever holiday you celebrate.
I’m about to head out to Boca to stay with my sister for a few days. It’ll be another big family affair, with my family and my brother-in-law’s family, too. There will be numerous visits to other houses, big meals, and presents galore for the kids. My nieces, 13 and 6, will get the bulk of the loot, of course. Most of us decided not to be grown-up presents this year. Freaking economy.
In my case, the economy = the dentist. I had my fourth and final gum treatment Monday. I go back in a month for one more cleaning, then it’s time to start on the many visits to deal with my teeth. All of that is going to make my $200/gum scraping treatment look cheap.
I also finally put in the order for my new specs on Monday. Thank God I got my Famecrawler check early this month. Progressive bifocals, polycarbonate lenses, anti glare, cool retro frames…another $300. Should have them in a couple of weeks.
My real Christmas this year came in the form of another family, actually. A friend of a friend was in need and so my mom and I adopted them and put together a Christmas package for them, the kids in particular. Spent way more than I did on my actual family this year, but that’s what brought me the joy I’ve been seeking, the holiday magic.
I hope you’re finding your own holiday magic. Holidays can be stressful, I know mine are. I have yet to pack and we leave in 90 minutes. Haven’t decided if I’m taking the laptop or not. I doubt I’ll have much time to get on it. I certainly don’t think I’ll be working in the next couple of days. The iPhone may be just enough to make me feel connected.
So Merry Christmas. Hope Santa is good to you this year. I’m praying that my friends have love and joy, that some of you find the jobs you need quickly in the coming year, and that I get a girlfriend under the tree.
See you on the flip side, probably on Boxing Day.
