I’m not joking. The punk is directly responsible for me losing my car keys at his big rally Saturday. And also responsible for me not getting Dare #5 done yet.
In short, I went to see Barack Obama at a rally in Jacksonville, Florida the other day. Mostly because Britt kidnapped me. But I also wanted to see firsthand what all the hooplah is about.
It was Britt, Adam, and I. We drove the 2 hours to Jacksonville, even though there was a much closer rally at Daytona Beach. Something about a babysitter…blah blah blah. Britt and her fucking kids, I swear.
We got there pretty early and waited over an hour and a half to get into the park. Then we waited for about eleventy HOURS before Barack got there.
This cutie was sitting on her daddy’s shoulders, waving to the crowd.
Flying overhead were a couple of planes towing banners. Honestly, I don’t understand the point of spending all that money to fly overhead for HOURS. Who are you thinking you’re going to convince at a Barack rally? There was booing at first, then everyone ignored the planes for the duration.
Raising taxes is not patriotic? Who the fuck are you kidding? It’s been done for hundreds of years. How much more patriotic can you get?
I can’t even begin to describe the sea of people that were there. It was just insane. And HOT. An d claustrophobic. Me being allergic to crowds, I tried to hang with Britt in the middle for as long as I could, but had to bug out to the back about 90 minutes before Barack got there. Just couldn’t do it any longer.
All of this for a politician. I still don’t get it and I spent over FIVE hours there. I’m just not interested enough in politics to do this on a regular basis. In fact, it was my first (and last) political rally. I went mostly to say that I went. Couldn’t really hear Barack very well because of the way the speakers were positioned. From what I did hear, though, good speaker. But overall? I would rather have stayed home. I know that kills Britt because she loved every moment, except maybe for the sweating our asses off.
I haven’t met many more passionate people about politics than Britt, truly. I wish I had her passion. Mostly I just hate politics and I’m too cynical to expect any real change from ANYONE.
There’s the man himself. OK, I got a few better shots, but most of them came out blurry because of the digital zoom.
I heard the bulk of his speech, echoes and all. He’s a good speaker, no doubt. He knows how to get people fired up. And I think it’s a very smart move to try and motivate people to vote by getting supporters to get OTHER people to vote. There were lots of volunteers there with voter registration forms…very cool. And they were handing out a ton of free water bottles…also very cool.
But I still don’t understand the purpose of a rally like this. We waited over four hours to hear a 20 minute speech. For what? Everyone there – well, most everyone – is already decided. Who is the rally FOR? It didn’t sway ME, that’s for sure and I know I was one of the few conservatives there. Well, I’m pretty sure.
The thing that scares me most about the Republican party right now is Sarah Palin. I LIKE her, don’t get me wrong. She’s likeable, but that doesn’t make her qualified to be next-in-line for the most important position on the planet. She just ISN’T. And as Adam is fond of saying, actuarial tables show that it’s very likely McCain won’t be around much longer, so Palin WOULD be President if McCain got elected. And yeah, I find that scary.
I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do come election time. I’ve been pretty much 95% certain that McCain would be my candidate. But I think he fucked up pretty big by selecting Sarah Palin as his running mate. There are far more qualified Republican women to be VP. He took a big chance on someone he didn’t vet very well, if you ask me. And it very well may cost him.
Oh, my car keys? I lost them in security. Well, I forgot them. I had so much shit to pull out of my pockets…extra batteries, cell phone, pen, cigarettes. I left the keys there, I’m almost positive. When I got back to Britt’s house, I realized they were gone. I never take them out of my pocket, so searching in my other shorts and in Adam’s car…nope. They’re back in Jacksonville, I’m sure of it.
And it’s all Obama’s fault. If he thinks I’m voting for him after making me wait over an hour (he was late) and then making me lose my keys because of security, he’s sadly mistaken. I had to borrow Britt’s car, drive back home (almost 2 hours) to get my spare keys. Slept here, then drove back to Orlando Sunday morning, dropped off her car, grabbed mine, and drove back home. Ugh. So I haven’t had time to do the last birthday dare.
Now I have to call the Obama headquarters in Jacksonville to ask them how to get my keys back. Ironic. I never thought I’d be asking Barack for ANYTHING. Hell, I never thought I’d ask ANY politician for anything.
But the fucker has my house keys.

Cigarettes?? How is Obama qualified? He’s got less time in service than Palin and he’s never actually run anything. Except his mouth.

That was rude of him. I was voting to Obama either way, but I agree with you that McCain screwed up his chance by picking Palin. I used to like him, until this cheap, obvious ploy to win votes.
Reply
Kevin – I agree with you. Barack isn’t exactly qualified, either, but at least he knows what the Bush Doctrine is.
Amanda – Yeah, it was a rather obvious ploy.

Kevin, McCain called – he wants is talking points back.

When I was in my 20s, I was passionate about politics also. That was back when I was naive enough to believe politicians meant what they said and did what they promised. I’ve learned over the years that the #1 qualification for a career in politics is you have to be a damn good liar.
Now I’m a total cynic, and utterly bored by all the political BS. I vote, but my heart’s rarely in it.
So, are you NOT quitting smoking after all???

I’m gonna say exactly what I said on your radio show but you know me, it needs to be said again.
I make the analogy of going to see Ben Folds in concert versus just listening to him on the radio. Yes, you know his music is good and there’s nothing new to be sung at the concert but that thrill? The one you get when he’s there, live, making the music that much more important to you and making your skin crawl with excitement?
That is the same way I would feel at a political rally. As I said before, we’re a nation ready for change. Hearing Obama speak is a powerful thing, I imagine. The fact of the matter is that this country has been led by madness for far too long so people are fired up this year, no matter which party they fall under.

Maybe he’ll trade you your keys for a vote. You’ll have to eventually realize that you’re a moderate Democrat – might as well just bite the bullet now!

Jeneane – Heh.
SJ – I agree with you. I’m too cynical to get jazzed about politics. And yeah, I’m gonna quit. Just hasn’t happened yet.
Hilly – Yeah, I get the concert analogy. Except I don’t go to hear a band for 20 minutes. If they showed up on stage over an hour late and then played for 20 minutes and left, I’d be PISSED.
Avitable – I am NOT a Democrat. I don’t think.

As I stated on Avitiable’s site, I almost went all stabby on the Obama supporters that decided to interrupt my nekkid time with HHH the other day. I haven’t been very impressed with either candidate, they have all these grand “plans” but haven’t said how they are going to get these “plans” accomplished. I have a bad feeling I am going to be flipping a coin in the voting booth!
Oh, and the keys….. Lord only knows how you’re ever going to get those back.

to avoid talking politics, i’ll tell you that …
it looks like adam is wearing a beanie with a propeller and that makes me laugh.
britt’s passion for this election gives me hope more than any politician ever has.
you should have lost the smokes along with the keys.

Seeing that you were spending the weekend with Adam and Britt made me think that my dare may have been dare #5… I hope I’m not wrong.

Barack Obama said happy birthday to me on my birthday, and I didn’t even have to wait eleventy billion hours to hear it! Just another of the many perks (ha!) to living in DC I guess.

If you open your door and see a black man sitting on your couch, don’t worry…he only wants your vote.

Uh, not to get all Canadian on you- but “the most important position on the planet?”
Really?

Normally, you not caring even STILL would make me crazy.
But not after this weekend.
What this weekend was about for me was not Obama himself, but about what he means when he says “Yes, We Can.” and the opportunity I had to see it with my own eyes.
People say a politician can’t fix anything – and they’re right.
But WE can. Collectively, if we become a nation of people who CARE – who ACT – we can.
Standing in a crowd of people who care is a rare and powerful thing for someone of my generation.

I’m impressed that you went given your more conservative bent. Way to keep an open mind.
But really, McCain? Doesn’t he strike you as a bit out of touch? I can understand supporting him eight years ago, but I think he’s losing it. His choice of VP is proof of that. And I think Palin is likable too — as long as she’s talking about basketball or her kids and not foreign policy…

I’m with you Karl, I’m probably 85% voting for McCain. But this post gave my day a lift!

Those keys are history, dude. See? I could have told you bad things happen when you go to political rallies. LOL
Can’t wait for the next birthday dare – they’ve been laughtastic thus far!!!

I saw your twitter that said your keys were found. Very cool.
We are in agreement on Palin being a giant mistake for McCain, although it certainly hasn’t hurt him in the latest polls.
Those pics of Obama are pretty good. Your cameras zoom does pretty good.
I think the point of even dedicated Obama supporters being there is to keep them as Obama supporters. People get swayed by the smallest and oddest things and to keep the momentum is important. It’s getting closer and neither candidate can afford to have defectors.

Personally, I like Sarah Palin and I don’t think we can throw the experience card at her when Obama has far less experience and no executive experience.
On a different subject, when I went to a political rally, it was FREEZING cold so the swarm of people was actually kind of nice and warm. Glad to hear you got your keys back.

Blondefabulous – Fortunately, I found my car keys! They were at the park’s lost and found!
Hello – I know!
SciFi Dad – Heh, we’ll see.
Kat – Well, good for you. He totally dissed me on MY birthday.
Bucky – I’d love to have Barack in my house. We’d have a great time.
Princess of the Universe – Yep, sorry, that’s how I feel about it. Why? What do YOU think is the most important position on the planet?
Britt – I’m really glad you had a great time. It was pretty cool to see all those people motivated, even if I wasn’t.
Finn – I don’t think he’s any more out of touch than Barack is, despite his choice of VP.
LVGurl – Heh, glad you enjoyed it.
Evil Genius – Nope, found the keys! And they’re mailing them to me.
Marty – I don’t see any Barack supporters walking away at this point.
BBM – I would have preferred a cold day myself. But they don’t happen very often in Florida, particularly as early as September.

The Queen maybe? She gets to keep the position until she dies and she’s head of state of way more than just one country. And the successor stays in the family.
Or maybe the Pope? Same thing, you get it until you die, and have followers all over the world.
The President: one country, limit of 2 terms.

Princess – Yeah, perhaps the Queen, though she really doesn’t have any power, per se. The Pope, I suppose, though he doesn’t control any nuclear weapons. Sorry, maybe I should say nucular.

No, Barack didn’t steal your keys…his people did.
But anyhoo…
Although my mind is pretty-much made up, I still had much respect for McCain and his political career until he picked Palin the Nazi. That woman scared the shit out of me, and still does. People can trump the “experience” card about Obama all they want, but really take a hard look at what Palin has done or “accomplished” and what plans she has if she ever becomes president, and I would rather move to Canada and live with family than have any dealings with that…..woman. Ugh. There were so many other qualified people in the Republican party that McCain could have picked. Why he went for the Antichrist I’ll never know.
I just hope that people aren’t not voting for Obama because of his issues rather than his race and calling it an “experience” issue….that would be the saddest thing of all and just plain fucked up.

The Pope’s got the whole wrath of God thing going for him though.
And the Queen has her steely gaze and wave thing.

I think he has officially surpassed rockstar status.

Glad you got your keys back. And I don’t think you’re a moderate Dem. That’s me. You’re to the right of me… which makes you a radical Republican. Or something like that.

I’m just sick and tired of listening to someone who has more money than Jesus, Mary, Joseph and all the little Bush family combined.
I can’t imagine how McCain can relate to us little guys working multiple jobs and no health insurance when he owns 7 houses and 13 cars.
His ads criticize Obama for having a lobbyist on his Vice-Pres nominating committee, but he has 83 of them working on his campaign.
Don’t even get me started on how he and Palin want to set back women’s rights to the 1950’s. He doesn’t want insurance plans to pay for birth control, even if they cover Viagra.
This rant was brought to you by a woman who has 2 jobs and STILL can’t afford health insurance.
Reply
Robin – Well, calling Palin the Antichrist might be a tad strong, but yeah, she scares me. And I won’t vote based on race…I couldn’t care less about race. I vote for who I think will do the best job.
Princess – true, the Pope does have some big friends.
Kapgar – He’s beyond rock star at this stage.
Winter – I’m hardly a radical ANYTHING.
Little Miss Sunshine – Hell, I can’t afford health care, either. I’ll be shocked if that changes either way, honestly. And I don’t like either of their ads. I hate negative campaigning.
