Ironing Out the Details

July 14th, 2008

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. That's what all the cool kids do. Thanks for visiting!

Tomorrow the Summer of Love at 2HT continues with my secret fantasy girlfriend, Lisa from Clusterfook. I think it’s cute that she shaved her head to be in solidarity with me. Or something. Anyway, Lisa will be guest blogging here tomorrow while I’m flying off for SecondHand Snackiephan. Or Karlifornia 2008. Whatever you want to call it.

Anyone who knows me knows I am quite the king of procrastination. I put everything off until the last minute. Pretty much. And that includes packing for trips. Usually at this time I’d be doing laundry, when I have to hit the road around lunchtime for Avitable’s place, so he can drive me to the airport on Tuesday.

But no. Not this time. I actually did laundry on FRIDAY. Granted, I’m just now getting around to folding it, but still. I think that’s a marked improvement. No, I haven’t actually put the clothes in the suitcase yet, but I just finished ironing a bunch of shirts (thanks to me not folding them right away the other day) and I’m beat. I HATE ironing.

Well, I *kind* of hate it. Truth is, I used to LOVE it when I was in the Air Force. I was the only one to iron my uniforms because I liked a really tight crease (TWKS). You can kind of veg out while ironing, watch TV, talk on the phone, whatever, because ironing doesn’t really use any active braincells.

But I haven’t ironed in a long time. Instead - and here’s Karl’s Laundry Secret of the Day - here’s what I do. Wash the clothes as usual, then throw them in the dryer for FIVE MINUTES. Then take out all of the shirts and pants and hang them up damp. With polo-style shirts, you want to be sure to button up all the buttons to the collar while it’s on the hanger. And be sure the collars are folded down nice and neat so when it dries you won’t have any wonky collars.

That’s it. Voila. No ironing. Ever.

Course, if you leave the clothes in the dryer for a while (or overnight, in my case), you’re fucked. But using this method also saves a LOT of wear and tear on your clothing. Things last a lot longer. And that’s a good thing in my case, because I HATE clothes shopping.

Socks and undies? You can let those dry all the way through in the dryer. But all of my shirts and shorts and jeans and slacks get hung up damp.

You’re welcome.

Yesterday’s post caused quite a stir. Lots of support and I thank you. But it seems we might have sparked a Quitting Revolution, since a number of you have agreed to hop on board on August 15th and quit smoking with me. Very cool. The more the merrier, I say.

I want to thank my special guest from yesterday’s episode of SecondHand Radio. Carly was great. Listen to it here or download it. Or go to iTunes and get the podcast there (just search for “Secondhand Radio”).

There won’t be a show this next Sunday because I’ll be recuperating from BlogHer. And 5pm Eastern is 2pm Pacific, so I really don’t think I’ll be in any shape to do a show at that time. But the following week? We’re on, baby.

I haven’t scheduled any shows for August yet. On purpose. I need to work on procuring some guests, but odds are high that I’ll be moving from Blog Talk Radio to Talkshoe. Why? Because Blog Talk Radio of late has been fraught with technical problems. People have had trouble getting the audio to work during the show, or they have trouble getting into the chatroom, or both. They get booted out of chat, or the audio, or both. The switchboard freezes up and dies so you can’t see who is on the phone calling in. I could go on and on, but I’m tired of it.

True, it’s free, and I realize that. But I’m also not happy with the ad placements on their site. The ads are obtrusive, sometimes playing AUDIO. You know, while I’M BROADCASTING A SHOW? Then there’s the pop-over ads which show up when you go to someone’s show page to listen to a show. You have to sit through the freaking 15-30 second ads before it takes you to the show.

Enough.

Talkshoe operates much more smoothly. I can have up to 100 people on the line at once, not that I would, mind you. But it’s an option. I like the way the chat works with the Talkshoe Pro client. It makes sense, even though it’s a little unsettling at first.

Plus, there’s no worry about time slots. I can have a show any time I want without worrying about how many listeners I’m drawing in. Prime time schmime time. If I want to have a show every night, I can do it. Not that I would, mind you. That’s Jester’s bailiwick. But I *could*. And I can do an hour-long show, a two-hour show, a FIVE-hour show…makes no difference.

The one thing that’s kept me from jumping ship sooner is the fact that I don’t know how I’ll play soundbytes/music on Talkshoe. But I’m working on it. Regardless, it’s not a huge issue. I’m moving.

I just haven’t figured out what day I’m moving TO. I’ve had a number of people say that Sunday afternoons just aren’t convenient. So I’m leaning toward an evening during the week. I ran a poll not long ago but didn’t get many responses so I ask again…

What say you? What night works best for you? I’m thinking of either a 1- or 2-hour show. Wednesdays are out because that’s when Adam & Britt and Jester do their shows.

Think on it. I’ll decide in the next couple of weeks. You know, while I’m basking in the California sun instead of roasting in the Florida sun.

Which reminds me…anyone in California wanna get together? Let me know. We’ll see if we can work something out. I’ll be in Orange County most of the time, but also San Francisco and San Diego and probably Los Angeles. Otherwise, you can come to me. I’m totally worth it.

I hate hate hate hate ironing. Almost as much as I hate vacuuming. But joy of joy - in this house there is a tabletop press thing - so it takes no time at all! It’s also one of the reasons I very rarely wear shirts… but will be using your method from now on!

  2. Mary on July 14, 2008 12:29 am

I live just outside of Palm Springs, and I’ve committed to quit smoking with you. I think you owe me lunch while you’re here in our fair state.

  3. Secondhand Karl on July 14, 2008 12:44 am

Bec - I so hate vacuuming more than ironing. I can’t do anything else while I’m vacuuming.

Mary - Hmm, I don’t see how your logic adds up. You should be buying ME lunch. I mean, think of all the money I’m going to save you! And…(consulting Google Maps)…you’re like 90 minutes away!

  4. SJ on July 14, 2008 12:51 am

    I’m in.

  5. Tori Blaine on July 14, 2008 12:53 am

I still can’t make the SF weekend, but I’m working on the other meet & greet dates!

  6. Mary on July 14, 2008 12:54 am

Hey Sport, if I’m going to quit smoking on August 15th, you’re going to have to learn to follow MY logic. It makes perfectly good sense to me. I’d love to meet you, let me know where you’ll be in Orange County.

  7. Sarah on July 14, 2008 2:00 am

I don’t iron. I use a steamer. It’s a lot quicker (to me at least) than ironing and I don’t have to deal with any creases because I seem to make more when I iron than not.

As to a day of the week I can’t give you a day. Working in retail I only get my schedule about a week ahead of time so I pretty much have to download everyone’s talk shows. So I will be fine with whatever day you decide to have it on.

Oh and I’m in California! But alas I can’t really afford the gas to get to San Fran (a lot closer to me) or Orange County. Poop. But I can try! As long as I’m not working. Eww work, double poop.

  8. Heather @ Desperately Seeking Sanity on July 14, 2008 2:30 am

See you at BlogHer! :D You can join me with the smokers… :D That’s where all the cool people are anyway…. (at least that’s why I started smoking in college…so i could hang with the cool people…)

    lol

  9. Miss Britt on July 14, 2008 6:48 am

    I. hate. ironing. Hate. Don’t do it. Jared does it. Hate.

  10. Secondhand Karl on July 14, 2008 7:33 am

    SJ - Hoorah!

Tori - That’d be great. Looking forward to meeting you.

Mary - Sport? That’s what my mom calls me. Are you my mom? And I’ll be staying in Irvine.

Sarah - A steamer, eh? That’d be nice to have. Now they have steam dryers, though I’m not sure what purpose that serves but to keep things wet.

Heather - I’m sure we’ll be smoking together, then. See you there! I’ll be the guy with very very short hair in a goofy t-shirt.

Miss Britt - Too bad we’re not married. I’d iron everything.

  11. Miss Britt on July 14, 2008 8:57 am

Luckily, Jared is an ironing fool.

    When I ask nicely.

  12. blondefabulous on July 14, 2008 9:00 am

Who actually buys shit that needs to be ironed? Not me! I got three kids, so I am a walking napkin to them anyway. Why have a perfectly ironed shirt and slacks when they have BBQ McNugget sauce, ketchup, and fry grease on them? Amatures!

  13. Avitable on July 14, 2008 9:01 am

All of my shirts get hung as soon as they’re washed, so they come out wrinkle-free. They don’t even need the five minutes in the dryer.

  14. Employee No. 3699 on July 14, 2008 9:43 am

I’m going to have to try your ‘no dry’ technique…anything not to iron.

I’m going to make an attempt…again…to quit smoking. So August 15th it is. I think I’ll try to cut back until then because going cold turkey is going to be hard. I tried Chantix before, twice, and couldn’t keep on it. It did make quitting easier, but I got headaches, stomach aches and really strange dreams from it. I stopped taking it and within two weeks I was smoking again. I wonder if anyone’s tried anything else that has worked better for them?

    Anyhoo, enjoy Karlifornia!

  15. Secondhand Karl on July 14, 2008 9:43 am

Miss Britt - Did you just call Jared a tool? Oh, FOOL. Right. ;P

Blondefabulous - Well, even t-shirts get wrinkled if you don’t hang them up right away.

Avitable - I’ve done it that way, too, but I find that five minutes in the dryer gets all the wrinkles from the washer out.

  16. Secondhand Karl on July 14, 2008 9:44 am

Employee 3699 - Another one rides the bus! Excellent!

  17. Jeff on July 14, 2008 10:14 am

Hmmm, of all the days of the week, Sundays are probably the worst possible for me. That’s the day my family signs me up to cram as many activities in as possible, since it’s the only day we’re all home at the same time. Friday or Saturday nights work best for me, but that’s only because I don’t have a life. ;-)

  18. Dragon on July 14, 2008 11:13 am

Why would you iron something that is going to be stuffed in a suitcase and banged around in an airplane? Anyway, have a great trip!

  19. Penelope on July 14, 2008 1:07 pm

I just put wet shirts straight onto a hanger and they are dry overnight ready to put away! Very lazy of me but hey, I don’t have time to faff about ;o)
I do LOVE packing though. 7 years at boarding school mean I’m very good at it too. I can fit the entire contents of my house into 2 small suit cases…well, almost ;o)

  20. Jenny, Bloggess on July 14, 2008 1:18 pm

    See you in San Francisco!

  21. Secondhand Karl on July 14, 2008 4:17 pm

Jeff - Yeah, I’m thinking probably Friday night, but we’ll see. Maybe a weeknight.

Dragon - I know, seems weird. But the way I pack it’s not an issue.

Penelope - I should have hired you to pack. Though I am pretty proud of the fact that I only have one suitcase, one laptop bag, and a carry-on.

    Jenny - see you there!

  22. Winter on July 14, 2008 5:00 pm

When stuff’s been in the dyer overnight, I give ‘em 5 minutes on high… wrinkles disappear on almost everything. See you soon!

  23. bfc on July 14, 2008 8:11 pm

5-10 minutes on high to cool down cycle unwrinkles most things. of course, not trying to cram a super wash load all in one dry cycle helps a lot. Don’t have to dry for an hour to get it all dry

  24. Secondhand Karl on July 14, 2008 10:44 pm

bfc - It all adds up to the same time, anyway. 30 minutes here, 30 minutes there. But yeah.

  25. Poppy on July 14, 2008 11:21 pm

I continue to vote for a Friday show, even though I recall that being a bad day for you.

I don’t iron, I burn cloth. So, no ironing for Poppy!

  26. Secondhand Karl on July 15, 2008 9:38 pm

Poppy - Yeah, I’m leaning toward Friday night.
