SecondHand Radio: My Daughter, Alyson, and the Alive Campaign

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. That's what all the cool kids do. Thanks for visiting!

I am thrilled as hell about today’s SecondHand Radio show and it hasn’t happened yet.

I guess I should first say “Happy Father’s Day” to dads everywhere. And that includes me. And my dad, of course.

Alive CampaignOn today’s radio show, my daughter, Alyson, and the rest of the Alive Campaign team will be my guests. For those that are new around here, or have perhaps forgotten, one of my twin daughters (going to be a senior in college next year) is joining a team of four other guys to make a cross-country bicycle trek from Waco, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska. They’re doing 4,500 miles in 83 days and it’s just an amazing thing.

The Alive Campaign is a suicide awareness/prevention grassroots group that some guys started at their college in Texas. I won’t get too deeply into the story here because it really is a good one and I’ll save that for the show.

The Alive TeamDuring their adventure, the gang is actually filming a documentary, which will be an inspirational movie about all the things in life that are worth living for. Alyson is a film production major and is quite gifted at the entire film thing. I think it’s very cool that if you donate a $1 (which is how much it costs to “sponsor” a mile of their journey) you get your name in the documentary’s credits. They need all sorts of cash for gasoline, high-def recording tapes for the movie, and food and lodging costs.

Ford donated some money to their cause and they have a van (chase vehicle) to cart people and their belongings as one or two bikers at a time make their way across the country. At the moment, they’re in San Francisco. They started their journey last month and are meeting all sorts of wonderful people along the way, getting lots of wonderful bean footage, and nursing their respective war wounds here and there.

You can see their entire route mapped out on the Alive Campaign website. AND they also have a blog, where they’re posting every day about where they’re at and what’s happening along the way, along with photos.

SHOWTIME: 5pm Eastern, 2pm Pacific.

CALL-IN NUMBER: (646) 716-9370

SHOW PAGE/LINK - That’s also where you’ll be able to join in on the chatroom action. Hopefully, the Alive team will have Net connection during the show so some of the guys can chat while the others are on the phone.

NOTE: This will be my attempt at a show without profanity. I’d like to keep it that way. These young adults (including my daughter) attend a Christian university and share the same sensibilities. I respect that a great deal and (while I don’t think I need to say it) I would appreciate it if everyone behaved accordingly in the chatroom.

There will be NO discussion of any of the recent blogging drama out there, please. I’m actually relieved about that because I’m bloody well tired of expending energy on it.

Please join me this afternoon. Chat, call in and ask questions, or just listen. Thanks.

Oh, and after MY show, of course there’s Snackie Radio at 6pm Eastern. Hilly’s guest will be Dave2 from Blogography.

Then, after that 2-hour extravaganza, there will be Turnbaby’s show, Turnbaby Talks at 8pm. Her guest and cohost will be Shiny from Shiny’s Takeout.

    Happy Dad’s Day.

Are we still allowed to be rude (as in dirty, not mean) on Hilly’s show? :-)

Happy Father’s Day. I’m going to try to listen, but have the day with my daughter, so not sure if I will be near an internet connected device.

I don’t know… When I hear ‘Alive’ and ‘Alaska’, I get all hungry, cannbal-style. Good thing they’re going by bike and not by plane, I guess.

BlondeBlogger - Oh, it hasn’t happened yet. The show comes on at 5pm Eastern time. Plenty of time yet. Or you can download it for later use, look it up in iTunes, whatever.

    Penny - thank you!

Martymankins - Happy Father’s Day to you, sir. Enjoy your time with your daughter.

Dragon - Thanks, yeah, she’s the spitting image of her mother. Thank God.

Finn - Well, both of my daughters are quite something, but yes, I’m really proud of this Alive campaign.

Whall - What, are you thinking of baked Alaska or something?

People at Christian schools don’t use profanity? And while I cannot believe that I’m going to miss an opportunity to call in and talk to your daughter, especially since Fab isn’t around right now to do so, I’ve got dinner plans with my own dad tonight.

Happy Father’s Day. You’re definitely a DILFIATNGW (Dad I’d Like to Fuck In A Totally Non-Gay Way).

  13. Secondhand Karl on June 15, 2008 12:30 pm
Avitable - I’m sure there are those that use profanity. Hell, I’M a Christian and I use it all the time.

And say hi to your Dad for me. I, for one, am glad that he and your mom got freaky to produce the one and only Avitable.

Oh my gosh I am so blonde. Seeing as how I left my first comment at midnight, it wouldn’t have made much sense that the show was Saturday night (I guess I thought I’d left my first comment earlier in the day…duh). Well, I’m glad I have a “second” chance to listen now…ha.

  15. Winter on June 15, 2008 2:56 pm

I’ll be there as per usual, Karl. I’ve also donated. It’s a wonderful cause. Happy Father’s Day!

  16. John on June 15, 2008 3:50 pm

    Happy Father’s Day Karl.

  17. Sarah on June 15, 2008 5:51 pm

Happy Father’s Day, Karl! I wasn’t able to tune in life to your show but will check it out later (I can do that, right?)

  18. Secondhand Karl on June 15, 2008 8:44 pm
BlondeBlogger - No prob, I rarely know what day it is myself.

Winter - Thank you very much! That’s kind of you.

    John - Thank you, sir!

Sarah - Thanks, yes, you can download it for later. Or find it in iTunes and get it that way.

I just wanted to delurk and say I listened to the show yesterday and it was fantastic. I love what Alyson and Justin are doing and after listening to them, I donated to the Alive Campaign. That was a great way to spend Father’s Day.

  21. Secondhand Karl on June 16, 2008 2:22 pm
Hello - Thanks, I’m glad, too. And it was.

Pi Girl - Hiya! Thanks for delurking. Glad you enjoyed the show yesterday. And thanks so much for donating.

Okay, I AM new here: You have twin daughters? Cool! And one of them is at a Christian college in Texas? I’ve been to Texas - I’ve even been to Waco! I think the bicyle tour sounds neat!

By the way, Happy Belated Father’s Day, by the way!

    J.

  23. Secondhand Karl on June 16, 2008 10:03 pm
HoosierGirl - Yeah, twin daughters. They BOTH go to the same university, actually. And thanks!
