No Dolphins Died in Midair Collisions

April 30th, 2008

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. That's what all the cool kids do. Thanks for visiting!

First things first. Today is the last day to donate to RAINN (Rape Abuse and Incest National Network) for the GBBMC. I’m all sexed out, believe it or not, so I won’t be writing a sex post today. But if you haven’t yet donated, I’d sure appreciate you taking the time and putting a little more into their coffers.

BONUS: I just got an e-mail from RAINN. Any donations you make during the month of April will be MATCHED up to $25,000! An even better reason to help out.

DONATE TO RAINN HERE. When you donate (and I really hope you will), please make sure you reference “GBBMC2008,” and include my name (Karl Erikson) and blog name (SecondHand Tryptophan).

I also wanted to thank Vahid for being with me on SecondHand Radio on Sunday. Great guy and a great show. We talked about blogging and TequilaCon and movies and books…all sorts of things. You can always go to the BTR site and listen to the show there, download it, whatever you’d like. Oh, and you can subscribe to the show via RSS, too.

I’m getting really jazzed about TequilaCon coming up in the next few days. Spent a good hour and a half talking with Hilly about it (and other things). Can’t wait.

Saturday I went to Sea World and had a great time. This was not the day when a dolphin died by crashing into another dolphin in mid-air. I’m sure there will be lawsuits now, with parents suing Sea World for traumatizing their children, but for me it was a day without dolphin deaths.

Click on any of the pictures for a bigger look.

Shamu

Now that’s got to be a rush. These people probably never come down from all that adrenaline.

Surfing on Shamu

Surfing U.S.A.

Just for Dave

This is for Dave. Saw this shirt on a guy sitting in front of us during the Shamu show.

Don\'t like your kid? Get another.

I love that you can trade in your children for better models.

Bouncy shoes

I have GOT to get me some of these bouncy shoes.

The future Mrs. Eriksons

Ladies and gentlmen, the future Mrs. Eriksons. Yes, plural. If I have to move to Texas and live in a compound to make this happen, I will.

Budweiser Clydesdale

Me and mom and a Budweiser Clydesdale. Those are some huge honkin’ horses. And beautiful. When the hell is Guinness going to get a big-ass mascot?

Shark encounter

The Shark Encounter is awesome. A huge tunnel that goes right through the middle of this enormous shark pool. Unfortunately, you’re riding on a moving sidewalk so you can’t just hang out in there forever. Unless you want to wait in line again.

So thanks, American Red Cross. Because of you I bid on these tickets to Sea World and got them at a $60 savings. All in the name of good causes. It was a fantastic day. I’ll eventually get all of my photos uploaded to Flickr.

I’m going to Sea World soon. I can’t wait!

  2. Whit on April 30, 2008 1:51 am

Guinness does have a big ass mascot, our livers.

  3. Iron Fist on April 30, 2008 2:19 am

Dude, thank you. Also: I was pantsless the entire time.

  4. martymankins on April 30, 2008 2:24 am

As I’ve said in previous comments, I was just there in December of last year. The Beer Garden was a great place to hang out. We returned again and again.

I heard the dolphin story on today’s Howard Stern show. Sad to hear that and hope parents are smart enough not to sue. Their kids will be fine.

  5. DaDuck on April 30, 2008 5:26 am

    Poor Dolphins.

Anyway, when I lived in St. Louis I could look out my window and see the “weiser” on the Budweiser sign. It was magical. Then I moved to Sweden and now I drink cider. lol

That had nothing to do with your post. I just felt like sharing.

  6. Radiomom on April 30, 2008 6:50 am

I have stood next to a Budweiser Clydesdale too–their feet are freakin MASSIVE and scary!

The childswap thing is knd of creepy to me. Although-there have been times, I have wanted to swap out my kids (Ohh-I am only kidding…)

  7. Shelli on April 30, 2008 7:42 am

NOOO! It can’t be over today. Tomorrow my post is all about you and your efforts with RAINN. Please tell me they’ll still be able to donate in your name.

Did I mention that I love Seaworld? I do.

See my post tomorrow. It’s all about you and how awesome I think you are.

Freelance Guru - It’s a great place. I definitely want to go back.

    Whit - good point.

Iron Fist - Excellent! That’s the beauty of radio.

Martymankins - Yeah, we didn’t hit the beer garden. Next time, though.

DaDuck - Beer always has a place here.

Radiomom - They are some big feet all right.

Shelli - Wow, thanks. You can still donate to RAINN whenever. Today is the last day of the GBBMC, though, so I don’t know if the totals will count for this month’s contest. No matter, it’s going to a great cause.

  9. Lady Jaye on April 30, 2008 8:20 am

Looks like an awesome time. I’ve never been to Sea World. Maybe next time I visit my brother I’ll beg him to take me. I love the shark thing. They have something at Ripley’s Aquarium in Gatlinburg. Very cool.

  10. Avitable on April 30, 2008 8:22 am

That dolphin story was unbelievable. And so sad!

  11. Michelle on April 30, 2008 8:52 am

Sounds like a great time. We don’t have anything that awesome where I live. Maybe I sould move to Florida.

  12. Kyra on April 30, 2008 8:59 am

I haven’t been to seaworld in decades. Literally. The price of tickets turned us off when we were last out there… but maybe it’ll be worth going to the next time we’re down that way!

  13. Secondhand Karl on April 30, 2008 9:11 am
Lady Jaye - Yeah, that was one of my favorite moments. Also loved the Penguin Encounter and the Shamu show.
  14. Secondhand Karl on April 30, 2008 9:12 am
Avitable - Yeah, it really was sad.

Michelle - Come on down! The weather is great! For now. Soon it’ll be too freaking hot.

Kyra - It’s great. Worth the money, I think. Plus if you buy a 1-day admission, you automatically get an annual pass.

  15. Hilly on April 30, 2008 9:17 am

I think Vahid was one of your best shows and I am not just saying that because I PPH him.

Don’t forget the card reader! hahaha!

  16. Secondhand Karl on April 30, 2008 9:21 am
Hilly - thanks, yeah, Vahid was a great guest. And I won’t forget the card reader. ;)
  17. Jen on April 30, 2008 10:32 am

Those shark tunnels are cool. We have one here in Minnesota at the Mall of America. (I like the Mall of America because I’m tacky like that.) The cool thing about our shark tunnel is that somethings the sharks attack each other or their keepers. We grow bad ass sharks here.

  18. Little Miss Sunshine State on April 30, 2008 10:37 am

Last year we had the year-long Sea World pass and I went 7 times!
Our basic day would be see a show, drink a beer, see a show, drink a beer, see a show, drink a beer.
    What’s not to love!

  19. Secondhand Karl on April 30, 2008 11:16 am
Jen - Yeah, none of the sharks attacked each other while I was there. Wimpy pacifist sharks.

Little Miss Sunshine - Yeah, next time there will be beer. I didn’t drink any because it was so hot out. Lots of water.

  20. Jeff on April 30, 2008 4:33 pm

Good for you for taking your mom out like that! That Karl is such a nice boy.

I understand all the other things you showed here, but why are there bendy ladies at Sea World?

  21. Secondhand Karl on April 30, 2008 5:19 pm
Jeff - It was one of their shows called Odyssea, a circus with bendy ladies and aerial women on ropes and ring…all kinds of cool stuff.
  22. bfc on April 30, 2008 6:05 pm

Could I swap my kid for a new car?

  23. Secondhand Karl on April 30, 2008 8:58 pm
BFC - sure, take my sister. That’s totally fine with me.
  24. Foo on April 30, 2008 9:15 pm

I love Sea World and damn, I will never get over how huge the clydesdales are. I wish you much luck on your flexible wife search.

  25. Winter on April 30, 2008 9:38 pm

Hey! You got a new watch! Mom looks like she was having a great time. The shark thing looks way cool. I’ve seen them feeding them at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I’m also seen them feeding (on surfers) at Asilomar Beach in Pacific Grove.

  26. Secondhand Karl on April 30, 2008 9:48 pm
Foo - Yeah, the horses are just amazing. Beautiful graceful things. Thanks, I’ll be looking for flexibility at TequilaCon. ;)

Winter - Yeah, got a new watch. I’m staying away from parrots from now on, thieving little assholes.

  27. PocketCT on April 30, 2008 10:41 pm

See I knew it! It wasn’t the reading it was, in fact the contortionist capabilities. I am referring to an older post that I can’t find at the moment but I hope you know what I am talking about.

  28. Simply Jane on April 30, 2008 10:45 pm

I hear all the Florida Sea World sharks are retirees.

I love Sea World! Ours has a Fun Pass that you can buy for the same price as a one-day entry, and it’s good most of the rest of the year. Awesome bargain!

I’m also anxious to know how successful GBBMC was. Quite a different experience this time, wasn’t it?

  29. Secondhand Karl on April 30, 2008 11:38 pm
PocketCT - Um, I don’t know what you’re talking about, sorry. I’m old. I can’t even remember what I wrote yesterday.

Simply Jane - It was VERY different this time around, yeah.
