Happy Birthday, Mom, Alyson, and Ashley

By Karl Erikson on April 1st, 2008

So a big Happy Birthday going out to my mom and my daughters. It’s pretty odd that my daughters were born on my mom’s birthday, being April Fool’s Day and all that. My mother insists, of course, that she’s still 36. Kinda freaky, since I’m 41. I think I started suspecting something when we were both the same age.

And the girls? Well, they’re officially adults who can drink alcohol now. Yeah, they’re 21 today. I love them immensely and before they were born I never thought I’d see they day when I would clamor to be around children. Used to hate the little punks, even though children have always loved me. There are times I get walked right on up to in a mall or something…a 2-year-old just wanders up to me and thinks I’m Barney or something, I don’t know.

Anyway, the birth of my girls changed all that. Many of you can relate…the birth of your first child(ren) changes your life irrevocably and forever. For the better.

I wish I lived closer to my girls. I miss them tons. And during the worst of times – and I’ve had my share of ups and downs – those two young women have given me reason to keep pushing on. I don’t mention
them often by name here, and even more rare that I post pictures…they’re their own persons, after all, and I don’t think it’s my place to go splashing them all over my blog.

I couldn’t love anyone more. I couldn’t be prouder of how they’ve turned out. And despite all the water under the bridge, I’ll always have a special place in my heart for their mother, who not only brought them into the world, but has done a hell of a job as a mom.

Best thing I’ve ever done my entire life? You bet, it’s those girls of mine. Happy birthday, Alyson and Ashley. I love you.

Although, if anyone needs a naked gorilla to jump out of a cake at a twin birthday party, you have my number.

You know, I never ask much about your daughters because… well, for exactly those reasons you listed and also I just figure that if you want to tell somebody something, you’ll tell them. But I have to say, I’ve always been curious to know more about them — I guess because it amazes me that somebody I’m friends wtih his 21 year old daughters!

They are absolutely beautiful. Hey A & A, happy birthday and congrats on the big 21. I’m sure your dad will buy you a guiness next time he sees you. Enjoy your celebrations, and be safe (ie, don’t be a drunk moron like I was on that not-so-long-ago day and let people try to convince you it’s a good idea to do 21 shots).
